Janice Lea (Burry) Tarrant, 79, of Effingham, entered into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, July 30, 2013.

Janice was born March 21, 1934, in Robinson, the daughter of Ithamer Boyd (I.B.) and Clytaus Edna (Parks) Burry. She married Robert E. "Bob" Tarrant on Feb. 12, 1960.

Janice was employed as an Effingham Unit 40 sixth grade teacher before her retirement in May 1991. She was a 1952 graduate of Altamont High school and a 1956 graduate of Greenville College. Afterward, she embarked on a 35-year teaching career that brought much joy to her and many fond memories for three generations of area students.

She was a creative, energetic spirit and pioneer of her generation as she was one of few mid-century women who rode motorcycles and had an airplane pilot's license. In addition to teaching, she was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother, a part-time realtor, in-home tutor and active member of the First Baptist Church in Effingham. She also loved music, art, camping, horseback riding, gardening and relaxing with family and friends on the country place where she and her husband lived.

She is survived by her daughters, Angela (John) Parks and Rayna (Gregory) Bissey; grandson, Landon Bissey; and brother, William A. (Glenda) Burry, all of Effingham. Also surviving are 16 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Jack Burry.

Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church, Effingham, with the Rev. Roger H. Marshall officiating.

Burial in Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham.
