She filled out a Reclassification form that was approved Sep 14, 1923 for Confederate Pensions and stated that she did not know who her father was, that 'she was adopted by Mr Andrew & Catherene Johnson'. Ellen also states during the 1930 census, that she immigrated to America in 1851.

He served in the Civil War as a Confederate Pvt. with the Alabama Light Artillery. After the war, he worked as a blacksmith in Mobile. They had two sons and two daughters all born in Mobile.
They were John Henry Jr., Joseph H., Annie L. and Mary E. Arns. John Henry Sr. died 8 Jul 1888 and his wife Ellen Elizabeth (Johnson) Arns died 12 Dec 1932, both in Mobile, Alabama.
