Andrew Johnson (1821-1873)

-Andrew Johnson was born about 1821 in Denmark. Additional spelling of his surname was Johnsen, Johanses and Johannesen with Johnses being the most common. His exact date of birth and parents are unknown. When he immigrated to America is also unknown.

BIOGRAPHY: In 1860, Andrew married a widowed woman by the name of Catherine (Harms/Arns) TENNIS, born about 1823 in Germany. They had two daughters named Mary Alice Johnson, born Oct 1861 and Hanna Johnson, born about 1866 in Mobile, Alabama.

They also adopted a daughter named Ellen Elizabeth who was born Apr 5, 1845 in Germany. She filled out a Reclassification form that was approved Sep 14, 1923 for Confederate Pensions and stated that she did not know who her father was, that 'she was adopted by Mr Andrew & Catherene Johnson'. Ellen also states during the 1930 census, that she immigrated to America in 1851.

Andrew's adopted daughter, Ellen Elizabeth Johnson, married John Henry Arns Sr. 15 Jun 1869 in Mobile, Alabama. John Henry Arns Sr. was born 5 Jan 1832 in Sonsbeck, Germany. He served in the Civil War as a Confederate Pvt. with the Alabama Light Artillery. After the war, he worked as a blacksmith in Mobile. They had two sons and two daughters all born in Mobile.

They were John Henry Jr., Joseph H., Annie L. and Mary E. Arns. John Henry Sr. died 8 Jul 1888 and his wife Ellen Elizabeth (Johnson) Arns died 12 Dec 1932, both in Mobile, Alabama.
