He served in the US Army in France as a corpsman (medic) in the 318th Field Hospital of the 80th Division (Blue Ridge Division) during World War I. He married Ollie Margaret Clawson on June 28, 1919 in Lincoln Co., NC.

The birth year on his marker should read 1894.

According this record there he was 5 feet 11 inches tall, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, could read & write, Protestant, occupation as a miner, discharged from the military at Todd, North Carolina. He was married as mentioned. He enlisted on May 26, 1917 in Abingdon, Virginia, and was a Corporal. He was in the 318th Field Hospital of the 80th Divison. He was discharged on June 9, 1919 at Camp Dix, New Jersey, by demobilization. His disabilities when admitted to the Home was sinusitis and tonsillitis, nypertrophied turbinate obstruct ion (nasal obstruction). grade four of infection, and 2nd figure on right hand amputated 2nd joint.
