ROCKNE ELWOOD BENDER, 78, of Barboursville, W.Va., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 7, 2010. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 11, 2010, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by Minister Dearl Hutchinson. Burial will be in White Chapel Memorial Gardens. He was born November 2, 1931, in Princeton,W.Va., a son of the late Randolph and Nellie Showalter Bender. He retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was a graduate of Huntington East High School and was a member of Farmdale Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57-years, Della Emogene Aldridge Bender and one sister, Geraldine Parker. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Michael Slate; one son and daughter-in-law, Rockne "Gene" and JoAnn Bender; six grandchildren, Heaven Ray (Cory), Cassie Jude, Michael C. Slate, Rockne A. Bender (Michelle), Nicholas Bender (Nikki) and Samantha Carlin (Luis); five great-grandchildren, Destiny Ray, James Ray, Dustin Bowling, Amber Bender and Rockne G. Bender. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Huntington, Box 464, Huntington, WV or the Arthritis Foundation, P.O. Box 96280, Washington, D.C. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville.
