Journalist. Co-founder of the Wall Street Journal newspaper and the Dow Jones & Company publishing firm. A member of Lafayette College's class of 1881, he worked briefly at John J. Kiernan's news agency. It was there that he met Charles H. Dow and Edward Jones. He persuaded those two coworkers to depart Kiernan's employ and create their own news wire service. Dow Jones & Co. was established in November 1882, with Bergstresser being the chief financier. The 24-year-old was apparently elected to be a silent partner. The three financial reporters were later joined in their ownership group by Thomas F. Woodlock. The organization disseminated economic information in an easier-to-consume fashion than preceding agencies and published its first stock market index in 1884, a precursor to the Dow Jones Industrial Average that has been released since 1896. Along with Dow and Jones, Bergstresser established the Wall Street Journal in 1889. He recommended the name. Bergstresser retired in 1903, having outlasted both of his co-founders. He died two decades later at age 65.
