Dr. Claude B. Sweppenhiser, 85, of Market Street, Berwick, died Monday at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Binghamton, N.Y.

Born April 7, 1916 in Berwick, he was a son of the late Dr. Claude E. and Mable (Bennett) Sweppenhiser. He was a 1933 graduate of Berwick High School, studied pre-dentistry at Temple University and was a 1939 graduate of the Temple University School of Dentistry. He served a residency in oral surgery at the Reading Hospital. He established a dental practice in Berwick. He was the first dentist admitted to the staff of Berwick Hospital, where he was later a volunteer medical librarian. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a captain in Anniston, Ala., in an infantry training center and then with the 313th General Hospital as an oral surgeon in the Philippines.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and its official board, and also the Berwick Kiwanis Club, where he was a director, vice president, president, lieutenant governor and governor. He served on fund drives for the Berwick YMCA and the United Way. He and his wife formed the Kiwanis Children's Heart Hospital Committee at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

He was a member of many dental organizations, including the Luzerne County Dental Society and also was a member of Knapp Lodge 462 F&AM, Berwick, Irem Temple, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania Lodge Chapter, Consistory, and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Berwick Elks and American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Claudia Ann Rowlands.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, the former Helen Heller; daughters, Ann Rowlands, Kingston; and Barbara Geiser, Binghamton; and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday from the First United Methodist Church, Second and Market streets, Berwick, with the Rev. Glenn C. Limbaugh Jr., pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Market Street, Berwick. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Mayo Funeral Home, 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, and 12 to 1 p.m. at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Kiwanis Children's Heart Fund, c/o Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, 17821.
