Prior to her marriage Edith bore a son after being raped by a Confederate soldier. She named him John. After her marriage to Samuel he was adopted if not legally certainly emotionally and in fact as a Cavins. Her children by Samuel Cavins were William, Charles, Sarah, David and Eldridge. After the death of her husband in 1880 she supported herself and her 6 children by taking in laundry for others. Her great great niece Wanda Smith Rogers passed on the information on her burial location as being near Edith's brother, Joseph Smith, in Bush Cemetery.
