Thomas Jefferson Weaver, son of James W. and Mary Perry Weaver, was born in Canonsburg on August 1, 1839. He graduated from Jefferson College with the Class of 1861, worked with his father as a carpenter, and taught at a public school for a short time before enlisting in Company G, 140th Pa. Volunteers on August 13, 1862. He mustered in with his company on August 22 at Camp Howe in Pittsburgh and was promoted to Sergeant on September 4, the day before the regiment departed for Camp Curtin in Harrisburg. Shortly after arriving at Camp Curtin, he became ill with typhoid dysentery and was too sick to travel with his company when the regiment departed for Camp Seward in Parkton, Maryland on September 9. He was moved to the home of Dr. Bailey, a local physician in Harrisburg, and was attended to by the doctor’s wife. He died on September 29, 1863 at age 23. His body was returned to Canonsburg where he was buried in Speer Spring Cemetery.
