Thomas L. "Tom" Powell, Jr., 60, of Las Animas, passed away on June 21, 2013 in the comfort of his home. Thomas was born on November 21, 1952 in Columbus, GA to Thomas & Doris (Hammons) Powell, Sr. He married Debbie Weaver on April 14, 1999 in La Junta, Colorado.

Tom attended grade school in Lumpkin, GA, and he graduated high school from Hallie Turner Private School in Columbus, GA. He retired from AT&T after 32 years of service in 2004. He also worked for the Department of Corrections until 2012, when leaving for health reasons. He was a lifetime member of Masons.

Tom is survived by his wife, Debbie Powell of the Las Animas home; daughter, Karla (Maurice) Vega of Johns Creek, GA; son, Scott (Alison) Powell of AL; mother, Doris Powell of Columbus, GA; brother, Dale (Liz) Powell of Midland, GA; stepchildren, Rob (Amy Pennington) Place of Swink; Autumn (Carl) Germany of Colorado Springs; Megan (Walter) James of Swink; four grandchildren, Sarah, Landon, Garrett Vega, Victor Powell; and nine step grandchildren, Ashlynn & Braxton Place, Gunnar & Miles Germany, Madison Place, Jocelynn, Miley, Laney, Averie James. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas L. Powell, Sr. in 1997.

Funeral service will be Friday, June 28, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of La Junta with Reverend Terilynn Russ officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, June 27, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Peacock Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church or the Arkansas Valley Hospice, PO Box 408, La Junta, Colorado, 81050 direct or through the funeral home.
