Gunerius Jonas Hangman, a resident of Maskell vicinity and Dixon county during the past 47 years, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Theodore Berg, in Newcastle, following an illness of several weeks. Funeral services for the deceased were held on Saturday afternoon at Maskell.

Mr. Hangman had been in failing health during the past few months and had been bedfast for some weeks. He died at 7:45 o'clock Thursday morning. The cause of his death was creeping paralysis. He was 75 years, four months, and six days of age at the time of his death.

Gunerius J. Hangman was born in Hodater Schilling Mar, Vermland, Sweden, on August 18, 1856. He grew to manhood in Sweden and at the age of 18 entered the Swedish army and served as a training officer for nine years. He trained hundreds of recruits for the Swedish monarch, King Oscar.

The name, Hangman, was conferred on him as an honor for his military service in the province of Hangman, and he retained the name throughout his life in preference to his boyhood name of Johansen.

Mr. Hangman tired of the strict discipline of military life and decided to come to America. He sailed for this country in 1882 and landed in New York City, later coming to Nebraska and settling on a homestead near Lime Grove, five miles south of Maskell, in Dixon County.

On June 23, 1884, Miss Kristina Walberg and G.J. Hangman were united in marriage. Following their marriage they made their home on a farm in Hooker Township in Dixon County for 24 years. In 1911, they retired and moved to Maskell. Mrs. Hangman died at her home in Maskell in 1927. Mr. Hangman continued to make is home with his brother in Maskel after the death of his wife until two years ago when he moved to Newcastle where he has since lived with his daughter, Mrs. Berg.

When Mr. Hangman first came to Nebraska, the country was an open prairie. For many years, he drove to Hartington where he did all his trading and business. Mr. Hangman was one of the most prosperous farmers of northeast Nebraska and he was active in all civic and church enterprises, being a member of the Zion Lutheran church at Maskell.

The late Mr. Hangman leaves to mourn his death, six children. They are daughters Mrs. Earle Conrad (Anna Emelia) Scott of Sioux City, Mrs. Donald Oakley (Selma Theresa) Mohr Sr. of Ponca, Mrs. Theodore Waltermore (Marie Otillia "Tillie") Berg of Newcastle, and sons Albert Peter (Inga Elizabeth Nelson), Oscar John (Ellen Francis "Nellie" Ryan), and Genard Carl (Edna Josephine Munson). One brother, Gustaf Johnansen of Maskell, and 22 grandchildren, also, survive.

Funeral services for the late Mr. Hangman were held on Saturday afternoon. Services were conducted at 1 o'clock at the Berg home in Newcastle and at 2 o'clock at the Zion Lutheran church in Maskell. Rev. R. Falk, pastor of the church conducted the funeral service. Interment was made in the Lime Creek cemetery.
