James Lipford, lovingly known as "Spanky", was born on October 16, 1978, in Pittsburgh, PA, to James and Martha Lipford, who both preceded him in death. James grew up in Homewood and attended Belmar Elementary and Westinghouse High School where he met his lifetime sweetheart and fiancee' Starr Stuckey. Starr and James dated throughout high school. In 1996 graduated from Westinghouse High School and attended Wiberforce University in Wilberforce, OH. Throughout his time at Wilberforce, James met many new friends and became an honorable member of The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Affiliated Masons of Ohio-Wilberforce Lodge # 21. James made a lasting impression on everyone he met. His fellow classmates frequently described him as a "real good dude/great man", "who had an infectious smile and laugh" and most importantly "someone they were proud to have known/called a friend."

James graduated from college in 2001 and moved back to Pittsburgh, where he worked for a law firm while preparing to attend law school. During that time, James reconnected with the love of his life Starr. Shortly after the two were engaged and added a new son to their blended family. James was an excellent, active, hands on father who made sure his children knew they were loved. He was patient and affectionate in his daily duties for and nuturing his children. Most memorably, James' youngest daughter Skye had a permanent spot on his lap. She was a real daddy's girl. James made sure his children had everything they needed, most importantly a committed, dedicated and loving father who strived to be there for them no matter what.

Many people would say that James was the strong, quiet type, however his family and close friends would describe him as engaging, fun loving, intelligent and good hearted. James also had a good sense of humor, at family gatherings he would frequently be heard sharing witty and "sometimes" funny banter back and forth with friends and family. James is a product of a very close and large family. He was truly loved by many.

James went home to be with the Lord on July 7, 2013. He was preceded in death by his grandparents William and Lorraine and James and Willie Mae, mother and father James and Martha, his uncle William "Scope", aunt Tina, and sister Lolita. He leaves to cherish his memory, fiancee' Starr Stuckey, daughters Emerson (Bleu), Skye and Madison, son Mason , brtoher Darriett, sisters Gwen and Trecha, cousin/best friend Christopher, nieces Rickia, Teaira, Kristia, Charlaa and Dia, nephews Durelll, Andre and Tyrese and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and close family friends.
