Harrison Henry Hesseltine, age 93, of Knoxville, Iowa, died Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Parkview Manor of Wellman after failing in health for the past four months.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Chaplain Bob Spilger officiating. Visitation will be held from noon until 7:00 p.m. Monday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at the Sandy Hook Cemetery in rural Brighton, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County.
Harrison was born March 12, 1920 in Brighton, Iowa the son of Daniel King and Mabel Opal (Lowe) Hesseltine. He attended Indian Creek Country School in Washington County. He served in the United States Army during World War II with the Headquarter Company Batallion in the 320th Infantry. He was awarded five Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal. Harrison had been a resident of Knoxville since 1962 and had lived in Wellman for the past six weeks.
Harrison was employed as a nursing assistant at the Veterans Hospital in Knoxville for twenty years, retiring in 1980. Following his retirement he worked at the Ford Dealership in Knoxville. He had previously worked at Brighton Schools and Iowa Mental Health in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He had also worked at Borkoski Trucking in Brighton, Iowa, and at the Ordinance Plant in West Burlington, Iowa.
Harrison liked trains, especially steam locomotives. He enjoyed attending Old Threshers in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He loved to travel, and he had visited the 48 states in the continental United States. He had an interest in Ford Cars and a vast knowledge of Ford Motors. Harrison was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Harrison is survived his sister, Roseanne Simmering and husband John of Washington, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Daniel King Hesseltine, and four sisters: Charlene "Peg" Simmering, Helen "Tom" Hesseltine, Margaret Hesseltine, and Vera DeWolf.
