She received her BA from Smith College, and her Masters and Doctorate degrees from Johns Hopkins University. She was head of the Geology Dept. for the University of Connecticut until her retirement.
She is predeceased by her brother, Robert "Bob" Aitken, and survived by her sister-in-law, Toni Aitken of Sarasota, FL; three nieces, a nephew, a great-nephew and three great-great-nephews.
