Betty Jane Matay of Akron, Ohio, died January 25, 2013 at age 88, formerly of Cleveland and California. She was born Jan 17, 1924 in Cleveland, the daughter of Edwin J. COOK and Wanda V. BARNES.

Betty graduated from West High School in Cleveland and for many years was a bookkeeper with the Operating Engineers Union. During the "Big Band" era, she was an accomplished Jazz singer. She was also a long-time member of the Garden Club at Stan Hywet Hall, Akron and volunteered with the Salvation Army/Ladies Auxiliary of Akron.

She 1st married in 1949 in Cuyahoga county, Ohio, George J. GERRITY who died July 6, 1956 at age 30 a resident of 7021 Lawn Ave, Cleveland, Ohio. He was born in 1926 in Cleveland, son of Alvin Joseph GERITY Sr. and Rose Kelly. He was a WWII US Army Air Force veteran who enlisted July 5, 1944 in Cleveland after finishing 2 years of high school. He was a Pfc in the Army Air Force in Tampa, Florida when his brother, Alvin Jr was killed in action in France at age 22.

BETTY'S SISTER: Mrs Shirley Ann Cagno SOLOMON was born 1926 in Cleveland. Her 1st husband Jack D. CAGNO of Bedford, died Oct 8, 1973 at Marymount Hospital, Garfield Heights at age 52, the son of Salvatore & Mary CALCAGNO. Their children: Jack Jr and Cynthia Ann CAGNO. She married again at age 58 on Jan 28, 1984 in Cuyahoga co., OH, Dr. Joseph Albert Solomon. He was age 66 and had been married before. He was born Sept 9, 1917 and died Jan 12, 2002 of Hollywood, Broward co, FL at age 84, a WWII US Army veteran and was buried in All Saints Cemetery, Northfield, OH.

BETTY'S MEMORIAL SERVICE was Monday, February 4, 2013 at the Eckard Baldwin Sanctuary Chapel, 760 E. Market St. with Captain Doug Dolder of the Salvation Army officiating.
