Richard A. Bloch, 78, passed away July 21, 2004, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at The Louis Memorial Chapel, 6830 Troost. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be sent to the RA Bloch Cancer Foundation, 4400 Main, Kansas City, MO 64111.

Dick was born February 15, 1926, in Kansas City, MO. He attended Bryant Elementary, Southwest High, and the Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania, where he received a B.S. in Economics at the age of 19. In 1955, he and his brother, Henry, formed H&R Block, Inc.

Told he had terminal cancer in 1978, Dick conquered the disease and, with his wife, Annette, devoted his life to improving the lives of others who are diagnosed with cancer by founding the RA Bloch Cancer Foundation in 1980. Always positive, he educated and motivated people to fight to live and beat their disease. He has received numerous awards, served on the Advisory Board of the National Cancer Institute, was a member of the President's Circle of the National Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Medicine.

Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Annette; his children, Barbara Stanny, Nancy Linsley, Linda and Mike Lyon, and Jim and Stacy Jacob; his grandchildren, Melissa and Steven Siig, Julie Vinitsky, Anna Vinitsky, Jordan and Melissa Jacob, Jennifer and Chad Markey, Andy Goldberg, Scott Goldberg, Cecily Lyon, Allegra Lyon, and Max Lyon; brothers, Leon, Jr. and Henry and Henry's wife, Marion.

Dick touched millions of lives. He was devoted to his family and his family adored him. He was a great man. He lived a great life. He left the world a better place. And he will be deeply missed.
