Jacob William Abley
June 27, 1869 - Jan. 6, 1923

Jacob William Abley, whose health had been in a precarious condition for a number of
weeks, passed away at his home on South Main street on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 6. Mr.
Abley was afflicted with carcinoma of the liver and since his return from the Janesville
hospital, some weeks ago, all hope of his ultimate recovery had been given up.
The deceased was an only son of Jacob and Angeline Abley, former prominent residents of
Mt. Pleasant township, and was born on the homestead farm, near Albany, on June 27, 1869.
Here he grew to maturity and worked his father's farm until 1902.
His marriage to Miss Nellie Staedtler, of Monticello, occurred on Oct. 21, 1902, and to this
union was born one daughter, Ruth.
Mr. Abley came to Monticello in 1904 and engaged in teaming and draying, which line of
work he followed until a few years ago.
Mr. Abley was a man of cheerful disposition, upright and honorable in all of his business
dealings. He was a good neighbor and a kind and indulgent husband and father. In the great
sorrow that has overtaken them, the bereaved ones have the sincere sympathy of all.
Besides the widow and daughter, he is survived by five sisters, as follows: Mrs. David Milks,
of Ashley, Ind.; Miss Cassie Abley, Miss Ida Abley, Mrs. Elias Lewis and Mrs. August
Mauhlcook. of Albany.
Funeral services were held at the house at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, with interment in
Highland cemetery.
