John Bernard Hammett was my paternal grandfather. I never had the chance to know him because he died long before I was born. My Dad would take us to visit the graves of his parents-my grandparents-but I don't know that much about him.

The 1900's found the Hammett family living at 72 North Street in Leroy, Genesee County, New York. By May of 1910, the family was living in Dundee Lakes, Saddle River Township, Bergen County, New Jersey. John was 19 and a machinist.

John and Mabel Bohm were married around 1912-13. On June 5, 1917 John and Mabel were living at 506 40th Street in Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey along with their two children Bernard and Mabel(Dad would be born in November). John worked as a Fireman at the National Silk & Dyeing Company.

The 1920's would find John & Mabel living at the home where they would live in for the rest of their lives-512 East 41st Street, Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey along with Bernard, Mabel, John,Jr, and Harry.

The 1930's have three new additions to the Hammett family-William, Edward, and Roy.

The 1940's found Bennie(26), John(22), Harry(20), Billy(12), Eddie(8) and Baby Roy sharing the home with John and Mabel. Their only daughter had married and had her own residence. Bennie was employed as a truck driver for a wholesale lumber company. John was an auto mechanic. Harry worked as carpenter"s helper at odd jobs.

John and Mabel were the parents of eight-one daughter and seven sons. All the children were born in New Jersey. They all survived except for Jimmie, who died 2 weeks after his birth. There are many grandchildren and I am still researching the records for them.
