Entered service on 29 July 1862 at Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, Michigan in Company D, Michigan 20th Infantry Regiment. He was residing in Ann Arbor as a student and attending the University of Michigan prior to his enlistment. At organization mustered in on 18 August 1862 with commission as Second Lieutenant, age 24. Promoted to First Lieutenant on 26 January 1863. Mustered out on 29 February 1864 killed in action at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, Spotsylvania County, Virginia on 12 May 1864.
