Born in Alpine, Utah, the eldest child of Conrad Petersen and Pearl Gerstner, she and her five young brothers worked hard on the farm her grandparents homesteaded. At age 16 her mother died. She missed graduating from high school because she helped her father raise the boys. Brother Charles, 9, died shortly thereafter and a few years later another brother, Louis, was killed in the war.
She married Robert B. Smith in the Salt Lake LDS Temple December 14, 1938. Beginning married life in Draper, they moved four years later to Alpine into her grandma's old log home. In Alpine they purchased farmland, built a basement home and eventually built on "top." They had difficulty borrowing money; as one banker said, "We don't loan in Alpine, it's the end of the road."
A professional chocolate dipper, she made more than 1600 baby quilts which have comforted children all over the world. A highlight in her life was receiving her high school graduation certificate last year. Active in The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints, she served as Relief Society secretary and teaching three-year-olds. A passion for traveling, she always returned home and welcomed changes and the people who because part of her Alpine.
Her brother: Clarence (Faye); four children: Alan (Susanne), Dennis (Veloy), Rayola (Frank Hardman), and Ronald (Joanne); a daughter-in-law: Teresa (Terry) Brog (Delane's wife); 19 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren survive. Four brothers: Charles, Louis (Georgia), LeGrande, and Elwood (Hazel); a son, Delane (1984) predeceased Luana.
She was laid to rest on June 1st in the Alpine Cemetery, near Grandpa Petersen's juniper trees.
