Thelma Ruth Carter Young, daughter of Vertis Asgood and Drusilla Warren Carter, was born July 30, 1926, in Blue Ridge, Georgia. Thelma passed away during the early morning hours of Valentine's Day 2004, with her family at her side.
She married Marvin Franklin Young on June 19, 1944, in Dallas, Texas.
Marvin, Thelma and their three children moved to Grantsville, Utah, in 1957. Thelma worked for over two decades as a secretary at Tooele Army Depot. She won numerous awards during her career for "having the fastest typing finger there ever were," and for her meticulous eye for detail and ability to produce error-free documents.
On Nov. 1, 1980, Thelma was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The family would like to thank all those who cared for Thelma, especially during the last few years of her life. Beth Greetis and Ruby Green were wonderful visiting teachers. Home teachers, Joe Elfors and Dick Johnston, never failed to make a monthly visit to the home.
A special thanks also goes to Harmony Home Health and Hospice nurses and aides, including: Isabell, Dee, Sharon, Margurita, Michelle, and Teresa, and to Gay for taking in meals and befriending Thelma.
In addition to her husband, Thelma is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ruth and Tom Hammond, Grantsville; son and daughter-in-law, Lynn and Mary Young, Grantsville; and son, Gary, Salt Lake City. She has 15 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
Other survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Kenneth Krey, Springfield, Ore.; and brother and sister-in-law, Vertis and Dorothy Carter, Tooele; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Florence Cleveland; and great-grandson, Ryle Nicol.
Graveside services will be held at the Grantsville Cemetery on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at 1 p.m., conducted by President Richard Thornton.
