Arvel Kenneth Gilbert, 63, went to be with the Lord Thursday, May 30, 2013, in Kingsport, Tenn. Born in Russell County, Va., he was the son of the late Claude and Margaret Gilbert. He resided in Lebanon, Va., until moving to Kingsport in 1994. Kenneth retired from the United States Marine Corps. He was a corporal with the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Battalion, 7th Regiment, LIMA Company serving in Vietnam from 1968-1970, where he earned the Purple Heart. He loved spending time with his family, working in his yard, and hanging out with his dog, Choco. Surviving are his wife, Aleta Gilbert, of the home; daughter, Jaime (Aaron) Lane, Lebanon; sons, Will Gilbert, of the home, and Brice Jones, Kingsport; granddaughters, Gwen, Chloe, and Sydney Lane; sisters, Glenna Rittenhouse, Mendota, Va., Faye (Danny) Chapman, Harrisonburg, Va., Evelyn White, Lebanon, and Annette Hughes, Lebanon; brother, Alfred (Judy) Gilbert, Harrisonburg; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport. Services will follow at 7 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Marvin Cameron officiating. Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, June 3, 2013, at 11:30 a.m. at The National Cemetery at Mountain Home, Tenn. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Posts 3/265.
