GLADE SPRING, Va. Mr. Sherman S. Smith Jr., age 77, passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013, following an extended illness. He was born on Nov. 12, 1935, in Meadowview a son of the late Sherman S. Smith Sr., and Mary Jane Campbell Smith. Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran and was a retired Virginia State Trooper after 33 years of service. He had also worked as a correctional officer at the State Hospital in Marion, Va. He was of the Christian faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Smith; and one son, Randell E. Smith. He is survived by a very special friend and devoted caregiver, Peggy Duncan of Meadowview; one sister, Selma Jane Swiney of Bristol, Va.; one grandson, Brandon Buck of Ga.; and special cousin, Helen Clark. Funeral services for Mr. Sherman S. Smith Jr., will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 24, 2013, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with a very close friend, Mike McCoy officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Mausoleum in Mt. Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring, Va., with Mike McCoy officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.
