He attended the United Methodist Church of Antioch and was an avid model railroad builder. He married Joyce Pilurs in Deerfield on Sept. 26, 1981.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Robert W. Gile II of Westminster Co.; a daughter, Tracey B. Gile of Westminster, Colo.; a stepson, Damian Pilurs of Glenview; and a grandson, Christian T. Gile.
