Fred Smith was the son of John & Rosella (Copsey) Smith. He served in the United States Army from 1911 to 1923. During those twelve years he served in the Philippines for four years and three months. Then, under General John J. Pershing, in the Mexican Border campaign. In 1917 he was sent to Bordeaux, a French fort, and later to the Vosges Mountains and toward the German war front. In Europe, for World War I, he served in the battles of St. Mihiel, Argonne Forest and Meuse Rivers. He was awarded every medal except the Medal of Honor. His ten medals included, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, expert pistol and rifle marksmanship badges, the World War I Victory Medal, a medal for Mexican border service, and medals for the 1917-18 Army of Occupation in Germany, the Meuse River, the Argonne Forest and St. Mihiel engagements. He also received three medals from the French Government. Fred worked for the Erie railroad, from which he retired. He had one son Paul Smith with his first wife, Viola Elizabeth Ankeney. He married May Homan and they raised Fred's nephew Dan Smith.
