Born in Ireland, came to the U.S. on ship "Huguenot" from Liverpool, England arriving in New York City on March 9, 1847 with his father Thomas and mother Ann J. (Quinn) Alexander,older brother Thomas, twin younger brothers William and Robert and a sister Margaret. Moved to Springfield, Cedar County Iowa and started farming. Enlisted in Co. A, 5th Iowa Infantry Volunteers on June 24, 1861 and mustered into U.S. service on July 15, 1861 at Camp Warren, Burlington, Iowa. Severely wounded in hip and knee at Battle of Iuka, Ms. on Sept. 19, 1862 and died in military hospital at Jackson, Tn. Presumed to be buried in National Cemetery at Corinth, Ms. as an unknown Union Iowa soldier.
