Mark Owen Moncur passed away peacefully Thursday, May 9th at Nyssa Garden Assisted Living in Nyssa, Oregon.

Mark was born in Heyburn, Idaho on October 9, 1919, to Charles and Laura Owen Moncur. Mark graduated in 1938 from Heyburn High School.

He soon met the love of his life, Ida Hollingshead. They married September 21, 1940. Added to this union were Linda Louise, Laura Marie, Judith lee and Mark Curtis Moncur.

Mark served in World War II. First, as a welder in the California shipyards in Long Beach, California. He welded on many of the ships that were sent to Europe during the war. He later joined the Navy. He was assigned, Fireman First Class aboard the Destroyer Escort the USS Bivin (DE-536). His ship and crew were headed to Japan when President Truman decided to drop the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. His destroyer escort was then rerouted to the Philippines to pick up war criminals.

At the end of the war Mark was given an Honorable Discharge and he and the family returned to the farm in Heyburn, Idaho. In 1948 he moved the family to Nyssa, Oregon.

He soon became a welder for The Amalgamated Sugar Company. He retired from the company in 1984. Mark was a man of many talents. He was a Master Welder who enjoyed teaching co-workers to weld. He sang solos at many events. He was an accomplished cabinet builder. He spent many hours building fine furniture for his children and grandchildren or helping them with their many building projects. He could build or weld about anything that was put before him. He also built numerous camp trailers.

He loved to travel the U.S. and made sure those travel trailers were put to good use. He took his children to National Parks and other points of interest. His children and grandchildren cherish his memories of World War II and other world events; he was a great factual story teller.

Ida's health failed shortly after their retirement. He took excellent care of her for many years before she passed away in 2004.

Mark was an Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various capacities.

Mark is survived by his children: Linda (Gary) Sant, of Naples, FL, Laura Jayo, of Baker City, Judi (Bill) Nielsen, of Nyssa, and Mark Curtis (Sandra) Moncur, of Somerton Somerset, England; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Mark and the family appreciated the great care he received during his residency at Nyssa Garden Assisted Living in Nyssa, Oregon. He also would like to thank Jerry Gyllenskog and Glenn Walker for their friendship.
