CHARLOTTE L. MCCALLA, age 81, died on May 7, 2013 at the Crown Pointe Care Center of Columbus.
She was born on March 19, 1932 in Grant County, North Dakota near the small prairie town of Leith. She was the daughter of Henry and Leontina (Mueller) Zeller and grew up on the family ranch with her six brothers and one sister.
She is predeceased by her parents and five brothers Melvin, Clifford, Carl, Norman and Donald and her only son Rev. Mark Alan McCalla.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Paul A. McCalla whom she married on March 28, 1953 in Chicago, Illinois. Also surviving are their two daughters, Melinda (Thomas) Vasila of Placida, Florida and Jodie K. McCalla (Terry Huge) of Cincinnati Ohio; granddaughter, Hayley Huge; daughter-in-law, Rev. Pamela McCalla; grandsons, Benjamin and Samuel McCalla; step grandchildren, Alan (Winona) and Lauren Eargle; step great-grandchildren, Wilhelm and Elly Eargle; sister, Marilyn Swenson of Fargo, North Dakota; brother, Douglas (Alice) of Prescott Valley, Arizona; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Charlotte was educated in North Dakota school system, attended University of North Dakota in Grand Forks and graduated from the Chicago College Laboratory Technique in 1953. She held various positions at The Ohio State University, retiring after 20 years of service. She had her childhood religious training in the Lutheran Church of Leith, North Dakota, and on December 25, 1955 she with her husband joined Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Grandview where she was an ordained Deacon and ordained Elder. For many years she taught the church children both by word and action the love and Grace of God. She was a pioneer in helping bring the Inter-Faith Hospitality Network to Columbus churches providing aid to homeless families. Her efforts were featured in 1990 on the CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt television show segment fittingly entitled "The Good Samaritan". She was active in foreign mission work going to the Soviet Union with the National Council of Churches, and she served as a mission volunteer in Sitka, Alaska. She also participated on mission trips to Mexico, Thailand and Croatia.
Her Memorial Service will be held at the Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1235 Northwest Boulevard, Columbus, Ohio, 43212 on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at 3 p.m., by Rev. Timothy Jones, D. Min. Friends may meet with the family an hour and a half before the service in the church's lounge. Private interment will be in the Greenfield, Ohio Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that gifts be given in Charlotte's memory to the Boulevard Presbyterian Church's Deacon's Mission Fund, and/or the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio, 1379 Dublin Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43215.
