Edwin was a butcher by trade, working in various locations around southern NJ. For a while he had a business in Atlantic City. According to his daughter Alice, Edwin was a birthright Quaker. He married Caroline, a Methodist, and was "read out of the Meeting" by the Quakers. After Caroline died he married a widow named Francena Doane Worthington, who was a Quaker, again according to Alice. Second marriage took place in 1915. Francena is buried in Pennsylvania, as she outlived Edwin by nearly 30 years.
1850 US Census shows him as a new baby with his family in Harrisonville, Gloucester County, NJ. His father is a farmer. 1870 US Census shows him still at the same location, now age 20 and helping on the farm.
1880 US Census shows him a married head of household in Upper Pittsgrove, Salem County with wife Caroline, baby Verna, and two 15-year-old hired hands. Occupation listed as farmer.
1885 NJ Census shows him in the city of Camden with Caroline and Verna. Possibly this is where he left farming for the retail butcher business. 1905 NJ Census shows him in Atlantic City with Caroline and Alice, age 18. Verna has married by now and made Edwin a grandfather.
1915 NJ Census shows him in Woodbury with only his 2nd wife. She is listed as Frances D. Kirby, although her name is Francena in other sources. Alice married and moved out in early 1915.
