Laura was an 18 year old Denison University freshman and lacrosse player. On April 17, 1982 her father and step-mother attended a lacrosse game and took Laura with players Kimberly, Tracy and Elizabeth to dinner in Columbus, Ohio. Laura was struck by a stray bullet from a shoot out between warring drug gangs. The incident was immortalized in the song 'Think of Laura' by Christopher Cross on the "Another Page" album. The album was named after Laura's roommate and Kappa Theta Alpha Sorority sister Paige who dated Cross resulting in him writing the song. Laura was "a friend of a friend, a friend to the end", as described in Think of Laura.

Laura was survived at the time by her father Edward C. Carter II PhD and step-mother Louise of Wayne Pennsylvania. Mother Theresa Howard.
