A.L. Gatewood was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. He grew up in Forest, Mississippi. He attended New Orleans Baptist Seminary and graduated from Baylor University with a Master's Degree in Social Work. For over fifty years, he was a Baptist minister serving as pastor for churches in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. In Jackson Mississippi, he organized the Mississippi Baptist Hour which was the first Baptist Hour radio program for the state. He served under the Home Mission Board in evangelistic campaigns in Alaska and California. A.L. was chaplain for a day in the United States House of Representatives, leading the prayer for the opening session. In Lubbock, he was administrator for Buckner Baptist Children's Home. He organized the Rehabilitation Department for the Big Spring State Hospital and was recognized by the Association of Medical Rehabilitation as one of only five Medical Rehabilitation Directors in Texas, which he was chosen to serve as Vice President of the Association. In 1985 A.L. retired and became a member of Richardson Heights Baptist Church. He served on several committees with a major emphasis on organizing and developing senior adult programs and for many years he taught the Steadfast Class.

His parents were Ethel Walker Gatewood and Ethel Phenice Keeton. He had a brother, Billy Austin Gatewood and a sister, Irma Rose Gatewood Burkes.
