Andrew Jefferson Offutt Jr., better known as andrew j. offutt, American Science Fiction/Fantasy Author was born on August 16, 1934 in Louisville, Jefferson, Kentucky, USA the son of Andrew Jefferson Offutt(1908-1953), a dairyman, and Helen Spaninger(1910-1984).
He grew up around Taylorsville, Ky. He was a graduate of the University of Louisville. He attended the University on a Ford Foundation Scholarship.
He married Mary Joe "Jodie" McCabe in early 1957 and they had four children, one of whom, Christopher, followed his father's footsteps and became an author. All five of whom along with five grandchildren and his sister survive.
He won an award from IF magazine in 1954 with the story "And Gone Tomorrow" which became his first sale. His career as an author began in earnest in 1959 with the sale of the story "Blacksword" to Galaxy Magazine for the December issue.
He was a prolific author across many genres, but is more known under his real name as a Science Fiction/Fantasy author. His main pseudonym was John Cleve, under which he wrote erotic science fiction, beginning in the late 60s. The first full-fledged Science Fiction novel that was released under his name was "Evil is Live Spelled Backwards" (1970) a novel about a religious cult in the 21st century. He followed that one up, in 1972, with "The Castle Keeps" a scathing look at the "Survivalist" culture. The he wrote "The Galactic Rejects", released in 1973, about three young people with psionic powers living on a "Utopian" world that is facing invasion.
In the mid 1970s, with 1973's "Messenger of Zhuvastou" and 1977's "My Lord Barbarian" he switched to being primarily a Fantasy Fiction author, usually in the Sword and Sorcery vein. He wrote a number of books during the 1970s and 1980s about Robert E. Howard's chatacters Conan the Barbarian and Cormac Mac Art. He also contributed to the "Thieves' World" series during the '80s and '90s. He also edited five volumes of the "Swords Against Darkness" anthologies between 1977 and 1979.
From 1978-1981 he co-wrote, with Richard K Lyons, the "War of the Wizards" Trilogy. He also wrote the "War of the Gods on Earth" Trilogy between 1979 and 1983.
Using his primary nom de plume, John Cleve, he wrote or co-wrote over 40 novels of Erotic Science Fiction. Between 1982 and 1985 he authored or co-authored the 19 book "Spaceways" series.
He was the President of the Science Fiction Writers of America for two terms 1977-1978. He had been the "Guest of Honor" at more than 80 Science Fiction Conventions. He had also been a consultant to the Writer's Digest Criticism Services.
In 1976, as John Cleve, with "Jane Cleve" wrote and published the non-fiction "The Complete Couple"
He took a short break from his writing because his style was too gritty. He had started writing short stories again in 2007.
He had also been the President of Big Brothers of Lexington, Ky. He was also a member of the Kiwanis fraternal organization.
He passed away at his home "Crazy Farm", Haldeman Heights, Morehead, Rowan, Kentucky on April 30, 2013 at the age of 78 years, 10 months 14 days after an extended illness.

He was cremated and the Cremains were given to his family. The Memorial Service was held Friday May 3, 2013 at the Funeral Home.
