Julius Soltau, was born in Hamburg, Germany, October 12, 1876, son of Hans J. and Martha (Rolf) Soltau, who brought him to America in 1888 and located at Moose Lake, Minnesota. They subsequently moved to Almena Township, Barron County, Wisconsin. He had received most of his education in Germany, but studied for two years in the local schools in Barron County while learning farming from his father.
In 1906 found employment with the Farmers Store at Almena. In 1909 he bought a livery business sin the same village. At the same time he became business manager of the Almena Telephone Company. In 1919 he sold the livery and since has been manager of the telephone company. The same year he established a pool hall where he also sold tobacco and soft drinks.
Julius was active in local political affairs, having been assessor for eight years, treasurer for two years, Chairman of the Almena Town Board and clerk of his school district.
On September 20, 1901, Julius was united in marriage to Emma Breasemeister. Their nine children were:
