Hans J. Soltau was born in Hamburg, Germany where as a young man he learned the blacksmith trade. He married Martha Rolf, a native of the same city. They came to America in 1888, and he secured employment at hi trade at Moose Lake, Minn. In 1902 he came to Barron County and purchased eighty acres in Section 10, Almena Township. This tract was wild cut-over land. He erected a set of buildings, cleared a part of the land and carried on general farming for many years. He died January 22, 1944, and his wife died September 3, 1908. He was a substantial respected man, well regarded by all who knew him.
