Rhoda E. "Rhody" Smith was the daughter of Drury and Milly (Simmons) Smith. She was born in Tennessee about 1833. She married John Stephens also of Tennessee about 1853. They had 4 children, Parlea, William Thomas, Alexander Drury, and Henry Stephens.

By 1860, John and Rhody had migrated from Jackson County, Tennessee to Smith Mills near Henderson, Kentucky along with his parents, William and Sarah Stephens (Stevans). Her parents, Drury and Millie Smith, were in White County in 1860; and by 1865, they were living on their farm in Enfield township, White County, Illinois. Several of her siblings had also migrated to White County during that same time period.

She died 15 December 1893 and was buried in Jarrell's Cemetery within the Stephens plot marked by "S" cornerstones.

Her brother, Ira Pinkney Smith married Lucinda Adeline Smith, whose maternal grandfather was Elijah Jarrell. The original Jarrell cemetery was part of his farm. It was later renamed Bruce Chapel Cemetery, a part of the Bruce Chapel Methodist church there.

The correct location for Bruce Chapel Cemetery is 681 Illinois Highway 14 Carmi Township, White County, Illinois. There is no known connection with the former Bingman Filling Station that was razed in 2012.
