A native of Washington County, he was born October 14, 1919 to the late James Howard and Nancy Ellen Pinkston Mann.
He was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church, where he was a deacon, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
A 1937 graduate of Springfield High School, he was preceded in death by a sister Emma Brady, on February 17, 1997.
He began a career in the hardware business in 1945 being employed by E. W. Bates Hardware in Springfield and later formed a partnership along with Sherman Richards and purchased the business from E. W. Bates. At the time of his death he was still active in the daily operation of the long-established Springfield business.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Martha Gowdy Mann; one son, James "Jimmy" Mann of Winchester; two daughters, Joan Mann of Danville and Marsha McSwain of Louisville; four grandchildren, Jonathan McSwain, Michelle McSwain, Matthew Mann and Brandon Earl Mann.
Services were at 11 a.m. Thursday January 7, at the Springfield Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Heneisen officiating. He was assisted by Rev. J. Lonnie Bradley, a former paster.
Burial was in Cemetery Hill, Springfield.
Honorary pallbearers were G. T. McRay, William Edgar Hardin, R. C. Offutt, Anderson Holderman, Billy Goatley, Irvin Colvin, Jeff Tingle, Billy Tingle, Kenneth Davis, Mitchell Reynolds, Mike Jones, Bob Walker, Ruel Walls, Dr. Brian Wells, Glenn Devine and Johnny Hardin.
Pall bearers were Jonathan McSwain, Brandon Mann, Matthew Mann, Gilbert Milburn, Howard Brady and Tom Minor.
