Son of Henry Nail, a white man and a Choctaw mother. Henry Nail was adopted by the Choctaws and served as a Chief among the Choctaws prior to Removal.

Respected leader of the Choctaw tribe. Came to Indian Territory during the Removal from Mississippi and died in Indian Territory. Husband of Lucinda (Sina) Nail. Sina is buried in the Confederate Cemetery, Atoka, OK, next to son-in-law Henry Clay Harkins and daughter Melvina Nail Harkins. Father of Isabelle Nail Harkins wife of Col. David Folsom Harkins.
