Maurice F. (Morrie) DeGroot Maurice F. (Morrie) DeGroot, born on September 12, 1916, in Combined Locks, Wisconsin, was called home by his creator at 3:58 p.m., on May 2, 2005.
Morrie was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 52 years, Mary Jane.
December 1941, he enlisted in the Air Force, attaining the rank of Major. Served as an instructor pilot for 3 1/2 years and flew P40 and P51 fighter planes. He retired as president, of Dairyland County Mutual and deputy CEO of Sentry Insurance. A faithful member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church, and an active member of the Knights of Columbus, he served as a 4th Degree Knight. During his business years he was a member of the Austin Junior Chamber of Commerce. Morrie, who loved the outdoors, was an avid golfer and fly fisherman. After retirement he enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by sons, M.F. (Bud) and wife Lynn of Liberty Hill, Texas, Robert and wife Kem of The Woodlands, Texas, Steve and wife Cheryl of Austin, Texas, Jim and wife Donna of Dripping Springs, Texas, Tom and wife Pennie of Sugarland, Texas, Don and wife Barbara of Lago Vista, Texas; daughter, Mary Kay and husband Chuck of Cedar Park, Texas; and close friend Barbara Morgensen of Austin, Texas; as well as several brothers and sisters; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home. The recitation of the Holy Rosary will follow at 7:00 pm. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, May 6, 2005, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church with Father Joe Tomei officiating. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
