Harriet Columbia Quircke Short was born in the hamlet of Capton, civil parish of Stogumber, Somerset, England. She was the daughter of The Reverend Robert Quircke Question Short of St James Angican Church, Trois-Rivieres (Three Rivers), Lower Canada (Quebec)

At that time, Anglican burials in the City were taking place at St. Matthew's Anglican Church, (now at 755 Jean Street, a few blocks outside the walls). Mount Hermon Cemetery, in then-rural Sillery, was not established until 5 years later
