Joan was born on April 19, 1933 in Torrington, Wy, the daughter of John Henry and Margaret (Deines) Helzer. She grew up in Torrington where she received her early education, then graduated form Yoder High School in 1951.
She married Marvin L. Gardner on July 25, 1951 at Torrington, WY, and the couple moved to California for a year and a half, moved back to Wyoming in the Yoder area for five years, and then in 1958 the settled in Torrington where she was a secretary for the public school system. In 1972, they moved to Colorado where she was secretary for the City of Aurora.
Joan and Marvin had four children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
