William Charles "Bill" Rodgers died April 1, 2009 at age 93. He was born Aug. 5, 1915 in Cleveland, OH the son of William Charles Rodgers and Agnes McKenzie McGrath Rodgers. He was born 4 months after his father was struck by a train and died.

In 1937, Bill and his mother moved to San Francisco with his sister, Alice Mulzer and her family and loved San Francisco. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Idaho, and during WWII he served in the US Army in Africa and Italy, walking and fighting his way up the "boot" of Italy to Rome in the Infantry.

He was a bicycle repairman, a bank teller and finally retired from the laborers union after helping Henry Doelger build homes in San Francisco and Westlake, OH. He never married. Many lives are much fuller because of "Uncle Bill".

BILL'S MOTHER: Agnes McKenzie Rogers (nee McGrath) was born March 27, 1876 in Gore of Lochaber, Ottawa Co., Quebec, Canada, the daughter of George MCKENZIE and Bridget DOHERTY. She died Aug. 12, 1961 age 85 in San Francisco, CA. Agnes was widowed twice by tragedies. Her first husband, James N. McGrath died March 18, 1907 at St. Alexis hospital, Cleveland at age 32, from an accident. Her 2nd husband, William J. Rodgers of 4069 E. 78th Street, Cleveland, Ohio was struck by a train and died April 23, 1915 at age 44 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Cleveland. They were married less than 3 years when he died.

William's funeral mass was Monday, April 6, 2009 at Star of the Sea Church at 8th & Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA, followed by a Committal Service at Holy Cross Cemetery where he was laid to rest with his mother. Memorial donations were suggested to Kelly Avenue Catholic Worker of Half Moon Bay, 160 Kelly Ave., Half Moon Bay, CA, an organization that provides food and shelter to the poor and homeless (and is headed by Bill's niece, Melissa). Funeral arrangements were by at the McAvoy and O'Hara Evergreen Mortuary at Tenth Ave. & Geary.
