Gertrude J. Adams, 90, of 135 Sour St., Beckley, died Sunday, Aug. 27, 2006, at Raleigh General Hospital following a short illness.

Born Dec. 17, 1915, in Bessemer, Ala., she was the daughter of the late Willis Jackson and Ida Hill Jackson.

Mrs. Adams was a member of Welcome Baptist Church, where she served faithfully until her death. She was a graduate of Morton Reeves High School, and she went on to nursing school at United Mine Workers of America in the Miners' Hospital where she became the first black LPN to graduate.

She was a lifetime member of the NAACP and a member of the Heroines of Jerico Lodge and Court of Chalathe for many years; she served as treasurer of the Melvola Chapter No. 1 OES and secretary of the Grand Lodge for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Newman T. Adams; and four sisters, Willa Mae Greene, Addie Toney, Josephine Allen and Marie Weaver.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen Harris of Detroit, Mich., and Virginia McMurry of Knoxville, Tenn.; an aunt, Viola Hill of Beckley; special friend, Hazel Dooms; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Service will be noon Saturday at Welcome Baptist Church, 206 Eighth St., Beckley, with the Rev. David F. Allen and the Rev. Craig L. Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the church.
