My grandmother was the daughter of Amanda Kump and Dan Sherfey who operated the tollgate house at Jimtown for many years. She married William H. Martin on 21 Dec 1899 and they had five children: Charles, Elmer, Rachel, Lee and my mother, Mary. My grandmother's passion was quilting. She would quilt until her fingers bled, then she would tie rags around her fingers and keep quilting. She was considered a "master" quilter and was written up in the local newspaper, having quilted 50 quilts in a year.
