Son of Rev Thomas and Mary (Whiting) Brainerd.
Husband of Maria Laflin Boies, married at Saugerties, NY, Jan 5, 1865.
Thomas spent his boyhood in the atmosphere of a manse, adjunct to a prominent Philadelphia church, and, after a course of private schools, followed the family tradition by entering Yale. There he made class crew and obtained his Phi Beta Kappa. One summer he spent with his uncle, Henry Whiting, who, from a Coast Survey boat, was plotting the erosion at Martha's Vineyard Island.
Thomas graduated from Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia and became a private assistant to Dr Gosse, a celebrated Philadelphia surgeon, and later with Dr Agneau of Philadelphia.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, doctor's Brainerd, Gosse and Agneau took their army exams together. Thomas Brainerd was initially a Surgeon to the 2nd Regular Artillery, under the command of General Sherman; later was transferred to the 3rd Regular Cavalry where he obtained two brevets, that of Major for bravery on the field.
After the war, Thomas, at the instigation of his father-in-law, Joseph M Boies, he became superintendent and later secretary, of Laflin & Rand Power Co. After disagreements regarding management, Thomas moved to Canada to purchase Hamilton Power Co, Windsor Power Co and Arcadia Power Co. Thomas later became partners with Lamott Du Pont and they had a lifelong friendship. Later, Brainerd ventured into the nitroglycerin business, a much more powerful explosive, though much more dangerous.
