Thomas was enlisted by Col. Walker for 3 years the 1st May 1864 at Houston, Chickasaw County, Mississippi, as a private under Captain J. D. Smith, Company E, Duff's Battalion, 8th Mississippi Cavalry Regiment.
Thomas worked in the lumber and oil business in the Beaumont area since 1870,never marrying.
Thomas was granted a pension from Chickasaw County, Mississippi [pg. 44] #2999 on the 4th September 1893. B. J. Bowles signed for his pension in 1894 and Walter P. Bowles signed for it in 1895 stating that Thomas had gone to Texas. He received a Texas pension #29802.
