Sandy was kidnapped, raped and murdered the evening of August 17 1978 and her body was not discovered until the following year. What was left of the body was returned to the family. Memorial services for Sandy were held at the Danner Funeral Home in Abilene on the 17 Apr 1979. Final burial was in the Cain Family plot in Rose Meron Cemetery, Oak Hill, Clay, Kansas.
Some years later a convict Anthony LaRenta who was on Missouri's death row confessed to stalking and killing Sandy and another women in Topeka, however, he was put to death before the detectives on the case could question him and so the case is still unsolved.
