Charles Edward Kersey
THOMASTON, GA- Mr. Charles Edward Kersey, 91, businessman and former long-time mayor of Thomaston, died Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013 at Upson Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services for Mr. Kersey will be held Saturday, April 6th, 2013, at 11 am, in the Chapel of the Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home in Thomaston. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5 until 8 pm.
Mr. Kersey was a life-long resident of Thomaston. He was a 1938 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute. He and his wife, the late Sara McKinley Kersey, started their own business in 1948, the Thomaston Hardware Company. They sold that business in the early 1980's and started a locksmith business, Kersey's Locks and Keys. They operated that business until they both retired in 1993.
Mr. Kersey was elected Mayor of Thomaston in 1982, and served for 14 years. His accomplishments during his tenure included major infrastructure improvements and getting a new airport for Thomaston and Upson County.
Mr. Kersey was an active member of Emmaus Primitive Baptist Church since 1942 and had served as a deacon since 1950. He had also served as clerk and treasurer for over 40 years.
Mr. Kersey was a long time member of the Thomaston-Upson Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Thomaston Lions Club for 60 years, a member and former president of the Upson County Sportsmen Club and a member and former president of the Upson Historical Society. He was also a tireless volunteer for the Upson Regional Medical Center auxiliary.
