James Christopher Norman was the son of Christopher Norman, watchmaker, and Eliza Rose of Brigus, Newfoundland. He was baptized at Brigus United Methodist Church by Rev. Thomas Smith on March 7, 1860. He married Emma Radford Wills on August 11, 1887 at the Presbyterian Parish of St. Johns.
