Son of David and Cynthia (McClung) Allen.His mother died when he was a child. Married Mary Ann Armstrong 24 Feb. 1848 in Columbiana,Ohio. Fall of 1858 they moved to KS buying 160 acres in Sec 17 of Zeandale TWP. John enlisted Aug. 1862 in CO K 11th Kansas Inf. and served more than 3 yrs. He was commissioned as Capt. and took part in the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas where he encountered Gen Price. After his Military Service, he returned to his Zeandale Farm and lived with the exception of three and half yrs. when he worked as US Pension Agent in Topeka. He was connected with the Union Labor Political Party. His wife was prominant in the Zeandale Christian Church.
