Son of Jesse and Mary (Thomas) Brainerd.

Thomas was born in Leyden, NY, June 17, 1804, youngest of twelve children; died in Scranton, PA, August 22, 1866. First marriage was in Trenton, NJ, October 20, 1831 to Sarah Jennings Langstroth. Sarah died June 20, 1835. Second marriage was in New Haven, CT, October 29, 1836 to Mary Whiting. Mary died February 12, 1889 in Montreal, Canada at the home of her son, Thomas Chalmers Brainerd.

At fourteen, Thomas became a member of the Lowville Academy in Lowville, NY; then considered one of the best educational institutions in Northern New York. Thomas Brainerd studied law at Rome, NY, but turned to the ministry, graduating with honors at Andover Theological Seminary, which later granted his "D.D."

Thomas began his pastoral work at South Church, Cincinnati, OH at a salary of five hundred dollars per annum. As the result of a pulpit interchange, a call was tendered by Old Pine Street Church, Philadelphia, and Thomas Brainerd served as it's pastor for over thirty years.

Thomas was particularly active in public affairs during the Civil War, sponsoring, among other duties, the care of soldiers as they passed through Philadelphia. His greatest hobby was riding around town in a clerical frock coat and silk hat. He always managed to feed one good-looking saddle horse.

Thomas and his first wife, Sarah Jennings Langstroth, had no children. His second wife, Mary Whiting, had four children:

Thomas Chalmers Brainerd - September 27, 1837
Mary Whiting Barinerd - February 24, 1839
Emma Gertrude Brainerd - January 3, 1841
Charles Brainerd - January 21, 1844

Rev. Thomas Brainerd's first wife, Sarah, is shown in the Finding aid for the "Langstroth Family Papers, 1778-1955" (see ) as Sarah _Josephine_ Langstroth, not Sarah _Jennings_ Langstroth. I have searched and have been unable to find a "Jennings" middle name elsewhere, or a family connection to that surname. Lucy Abigail Brainerd's 1908 "Descendants of Daniel... Brainerd" gives only the middle initial "J"; the UMichigan Clements Library -- since it is working from the family papers -- seems an authoritative source for "Josephine", which is also shown in the family tree at .
