William Edward Abbott, 80, of Bedford, Ky., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Audubon Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
He was born March 12, 1923, in Turners Station, Ky., the son of Edward and Allie Grace Birch Abbott. He was retired from Reliance Electric in Madison. He was a Kentucky Colonel, member of Post 41 in Carrollton, Ky., D.A.V. 55 in Madison and his name is on the Wall of Normandy commemorating the D-Day invasion. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received a purple heart for his services.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Tucker Abbott; five daughters, Rebecca Lucas of Carrollton, Rose Hatmaker of Verona, Ky., Darlene Anderson of Moon Township, Pa., Debbie Russell of Elizabethtown, Ky., and Joyce Gautier of Bedford; two sons, Norman Abbott of Ghent, Ky., and Terry Abbott of Bedford; one brother, Melvin Abbott of Crittenden, Ky.; and 27 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Clara Knox and Ruth Singer; one son, Christopher Abbott; two sisters, Aliene Sparks and Anna Mae Decker; and three brothers, Audie, Lewis and John Abbott.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton, with burial in the Carrollton I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

He was a retired employee of Reliance Electric Co., Madison, Ind., and a member of Disabled American Veterans Post 55 in Madison and an Army veteran of World War II. Daughters, Clara Knox and Ruth Singer, and a son, Christopher Abbott, all preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Tucker Abbott; daughters, Rebecca Lucas of Carrollton, Rose Hatmaker of Verona, Darlene Anderson of Moon Township, Pa., Debbie Russell of Elizabethtown and Joyce Gautier of Bedford; sons, Norman Abbott of Ghent and Terry Abbott of Bedford; a brother, Melvin Abbott of Crittenden; 27 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
